We have reached the lowest point of the season as the Yankees lost a series to the Twins. That’s right, the Twins who have spent nearly a quarter of a century getting their teeth kicked in by the Yankees. That’s nine losses in 10 games and the annual Summer Swoon is now in full swing. Lets get to it.
I wrote the other day that the happiest team in MLB this weekend was going to be the Minnesota Twins because it was their turn to play the God-awful, pathetically putrid New York Yankees.
The Twins are a team no one expected to be anywhere near the playoff race this season yet they are right in the middle of it, so yeah, they couldn’t wait to get to the Bronx knowing their ignominious history against the Yankees wasn’t going to matter. They knew they were in the right place at the right time, facing a walking dead group of zombies who are embarrassing the prestigious pinstripes.
And while they reverted to the Twins of old and stubbed their toe in the opener which enabled the Yankees to end their seven-game losing streak, it was all Minnesota on Saturday and Sunday, two one-sided beatdowns during which the Yankees weren’t even competitive. This was the first time the Twins won a series at Yankee Stadium since 2014.
History did not matter this weekend. The Twins were 46-127 counting the postseason since the start of 2002 against the Yankees, the most lopsided matchup in MLB in that time frame. But these Yankees are not any of those Yankees because these Yankees, in this moment in time, are the worst team in MLB.
Reliever Camilo Doval is the face of the Yankees’ horrid play the past three weeks, yet Aaron Boone continues to defend him despite the hideous numbers he has put up.
“We are not playing well, we can’t catch a break and it keeps compounding,” Gerrit Cole said. “You can’t point at one thing and say, ‘Fix it.’ Because I don’t think there is just one thing.”
He’s right, it’s not just one thing, it’s everything.
